Kanchenjunga (3rd Higest Mountain in the World 8598 meters)


Introduction

Mountains of India play a key role in forming the ecosystem of the country. “The jewels of India”, a term that truly describes the top 10 highest mountain peaks of India. Since time immemorial the Himalayas have attracted millions of tourist because of its mountain peaks and snowy glaciers.The two major mountain ranges of North and North East India are Karakoram Range and Himalayan Range. These two ranges are home to few of the India’s highest peaks which are also the part of top highest peaks of the world.

 India is home to some of the tallest and gallant mountain ranges in the world. These ranges come with some of the most attractive sceneries and ecosystems in the world. Here is list of top 10 Highest Mountains of the India.  Kangchenjunga is the highest peak in India and second highest in Nepal. 

    1.     Kangchenjunga  (28,169 feet (8,586 meters) :-
     Kangchenjunga is the highest peak in India and second highest in Nepal     and Third Highest peak of the world. 

 Location: Border of Nepal and India, central Asia

 First Ascent: George Band and Joe Brown (UK), May 25, 1955
The name Kangchenjunga translates "Five Treasures of Snow," referring to Kangchenjunga's five peaks. The Tibetan words are: Kang (Snow) chen (Big) dzö (Treasury) nga (Five). The five treasures are Gold, Silver, Precious Stones, Grain, and Holy Scriptures.
Four of Kangchenjunga's five summits top 8,000 meters. Three of the five, including the highest summit, are in Sikkim, an Indian state, while the other two are in Nepal. The five summits are:

Kangchenjunga Main: 28,169 feet (8,586 meters); 12,867 feet (3,922 meters) of prominence

Kangchenjunga West: 27,904 feet (8,505 meters); 443 feet (135 meters) of prominence

Kangchenjunga Central: 27,828 feet (8,482 meters); 105 feet (32 meters) of prominence

Kangchenjunga South: 27,867 feet (8,494 meters); 390 feet (119 meters) of prominence

Kangbachen: 25,928 feet (7,903 meters); 337 feet (103 meters) of prominence

First Attempt to Climb Kangchenjunga
The first attempt to climb Kangchenjunga was in 1905 by a party led by ALEISTER Crowley who had attempted K2 three years before, and Dr. Jules Jacot-Guillarmod on the southwest side of the mountain. The expedition climbed to 21,300 feet (6,500 meters) on August 31 when they retreated because of avalanche danger. The following day, September 1, three team members climbed higher, possibly Crowley thought to "approximately 25,000 feet," although the height was unsubstantiated. Later that day Alexi Pache, one of the three climbers, was killed in an avalanche along with three porters.
First Ascent in 1955 by British Party
The 1955 first ascent party included famed British rock ace Joe Brown, who climbed a 5.8 rock section on the ridge just below the summit. 
2nd Ascent by the Indian Army
The second ascent was by an Indian Army team up the difficult northeast spur in 1977.
First Woman Climbs Kanchenjunga
On May 18, 1998 Ginette Harrison, a British climber who lived in both Australia and the United States, became the first woman to reach Kangchenjunga's summit. Kangchenjunga was the last 8,000-meter peak to be climbed by a woman.

2.Nanda Devi (25663 ft, 7824 m) :-


Nanda devi is the second highest mountain peak in India and 23th Highest Independent  peak in the world . This is the highest peak (entirely) in the country, as Kanchenjunga lies on the border areas of India and Nepal. It was the highest known mountain in the world until 1808 when western surveyors discovered Dhaulagiri. The mountain stands tall at an elevation of 7824 meters (25663 ft).

 3.Kamet (25446 ft, 7756 m):-


Kamet is the second highest mountain peak in Garhwal Himalayas after Nanda Devi . It lies in the Chamboli District of Uttrakhand. It is the third highest peak in India (according to India however, the rank is much lower as it includes in its list of mountains all those in Pakistan occupied Kashmir). The Kamet mountain peak is the 29th highest in the world.

An Indian expedition from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling makes the second ascent of Kamet on 6th July,1955, 

4. Saser Kangri I (25,171 ft, 7672 m ):-

Saser Kangri I (or Sasir Kangri) is the highest peak in the Saser Muztagh, the easternmost sub-range of the Karakoram range in India. This massif lays toward the northwestern end of the Saser Muztagh, at the head of the North Shukpa Kunchang Glacier, a major glacier, which drains the eastern slopes of the group. The mountain stands at an elevation of 7,672 m (25,171 ft) and is ranked at no. 35 in world’s highest mountain peaks

5.Mamostong Kangri (24,659 ft, 7516 m ):-

Mamostong Kangri or Mamostang Kangri is the highest peak in the remote Rimo Muztagh range, which is a subrange of the Karakoram range in India. The Karakoram Range is spread in three countries namely Pakistan, India and China. Mount Mamostong lies in Indian part of Karakoram Range. The mountain stands at an elevation of 7,516 meters (24,659 feet) and is raked 48th in world’s highest peaks.

6. Saser Kangri II (24,665 ft, 7518 m):-

Another  peak in the Saser Muztagh is Saser Kangri II. The eastern elevation of the peak is 7,518 m (24,665 ft) and the western elevation is 7,500 meters. Saser Kangri II is ranked 49 in the top 100 mountain peaks of the world.

 7. Saser Kangri III (24,590 ft, 7495 m):-

This mountain is located on Saser Muztagh Range that is a sub-range of Karakoram Range Saser Kangri III is ranked 51 in the top 100 mountain peaks of the world. This mountain is located on Saser Muztagh Range that is a sub-range of Karakoram Range.

8. Saser Kangri IV (24,331 ft, 7416 m):-

The Saser Kangri massif consists of four main peaks and Saser Kangri IV being the smallest of them all. This mountain is located on Saser Muztagh Range that is a sub-range of Karakoram Range.

9. Ghent Kangri (24,281 ft, 7401 m):-

Ghent Kangri (or Mount Ghent, Ghaint I) is a high peak at the north end of the Saltoro Mountains, a subrange of the Karakoram range. It is located west of the Siachen Glacier in an area under Indian control since 1984. Mount Ghent stands at an elevation of 7401 meters (24281 ft) and is ranked 69th in the list of highest mountain peaks of the world.

10. Abi Gamin (24,131 ft, 7,355 m):-

Abi Gamin or Ibi Gamin is one of the highest peaks located in Chamoli district of the Indian state Uttrakhand . It lies on India-Tibet border just 2 km away from mount Kamet. It is also the secong highest peak of the region after Kamet. This peak is a part of Himalayan Range and is situated on the watershed of the upper Alaknanda and Dhauli.
